Prior to the elves erecting the protective circle around the city humans commanded mechs into the forest. This didn’t work out well for anyone, and it was a relief when this period came to an end.

The pilots are given a serum which makes interfacing with their units incredibly efficient. Their nervous system becomes hyper sensitive and the electromagnetic signals in the brain become incredibly easy to pick up by the units control systems. The downsides are bountiful, minor wounds feel like their souls are getting ripped out and a gentle caress can lead to an instant embarrassing orgasm. Other side effects include feminisation of male pilots due to hormone imbalances.

This particular side effect was eventually worked out but was reinstated after complaints among the pilots who found it was one of the only upsides of working in the defence force. Today the units are primarily used during emergencies.
